daily mitzvah of immense holiness. Yet we do not wear them on Shabbat or Yom Tov. Halacha goes even further and prohibits wearing them on these sacred days.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-summary\">\nWhy does a holier day remove the need for such a sacred mitzvah? Shabbat is itself a sign between Hashem and the Jewish people.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"answer-box\">\n<p>\n<strong>The essential answer:<\/strong> Tefillin are called an <em>ot<\/em>, a sign of the covenant between Hashem and Israel. Shabbat and the Festivals are also called an <em>ot<\/em>. When the sign of Shabbat is present, no additional sign is required. The Shulchan Aruch explains that adding another sign would diminish the unique sign represented by the holy day.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>1. The Two Teachings of the Gemara<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe Gemara in<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Menachot.36b?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nMenachot 36b<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\npresents two teachings explaining why the mitzvah of Tefillin does not apply on Shabbat and Festivals.\n<\/p>\n<h3>First Teaching: \u201cDays,\u201d but Not Every Day<\/h3>\n<p>\nAt the conclusion of the first Torah passage contained inside Tefillin, the Torah states:\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"source-box\">\n<span class=\"hebrew\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05de\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d7\u05bb\u05e7\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05ea \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e2\u05b2\u05d3\u05b8\u05d4\u05bc \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05b8\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05de\u05b8\u05d4<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cYou shall observe this ordinance at its appointed time, from day to day.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> Exodus 13:10.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nRabbi Yosei HaGelili understands the words <em>miyamim yamima<\/em>, \u201cfrom days to days,\u201d as a limitation. The Torah refers to certain days, but not to every day.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u201cDays,\u201d but not all days. This excludes Shabbat and Festivals.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThis interpretation follows the opinion that the expression \u201cthis ordinance\u201d refers to the mitzvah of Tefillin. What Does This \u201cSign\u201d Represent?<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe signs of Tefillin and Shabbat express several fundamental principles of Jewish faith.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"meaning-grid\">\n<div class=\"meaning-card\">\n<h3>The Exodus from Egypt<\/h3>\n<p>\nTefillin recall that Hashem brought the Jewish people out of Egypt with His mighty hand. Shabbat also recalls the Exodus through Kiddush and prayer.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"meaning-card\">\n<h3>Creation<\/h3>\n<p>\nResting on Shabbat testifies that Hashem created the world in six days and ceased His creative work on the seventh.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"meaning-card\">\n<h3>The Covenant with Israel<\/h3>\n<p>\nBoth Tefillin and Shabbat express the unique covenant connecting Hashem and the Jewish people.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nDuring the week, we carry this testimony on our bodies: on the arm, corresponding to action and the heart, and on the head, corresponding to thought and understanding.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOn Shabbat, the entire way we live the day becomes the testimony. Resting from prohibited labor, reciting Kiddush, praying, learning Torah, and honoring the day all proclaim our covenant with Hashem.\n<\/p>\n<h2>3. Why Are Tefillin Prohibited Rather Than Merely Optional?<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Shulchan_Arukh%2C_Orach_Chayim.31.1?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nShulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 31:1<br \/>\n<\/a>,<br \/>\nrules that it is prohibited to wear Tefillin on Shabbat and Yom Tov because these days are themselves signs.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWearing an additional sign would diminish the honor of the sign belonging to Shabbat and Yom Tov.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nNot wearing Tefillin on Shabbat is therefore not a spiritual deficiency or a relaxation of the mitzvah.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt expresses the greatness of the day: Shabbat already contains the spiritual testimony that Tefillin provide throughout the week.\n<\/p>\n<h2>4. Does Shabbat Actually Replace Tefillin?<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe word \u201creplace\u201d must be understood carefully. Shabbat is not another form of Tefillin, and the two mitzvot are not identical.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThey do, however, share the function of serving as an <em>ot<\/em>, a sign of the covenant. What About Yom Tov and Chol HaMoed?<\/h2>\n<p>\nTefillin are not worn on Yom Tov because Festivals are also considered a sign.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRegarding <strong>Chol HaMoed<\/strong>, there is an important difference between halachic authorities and communal customs. The Shulchan Aruch rules that Tefillin are not worn, while the Rema records the custom of some Ashkenazi communities to wear them.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEach person should follow his established community custom and the ruling of his rabbi. In Israel, the widespread practice among Sephardim and many Ashkenazi communities is not to wear Tefillin during Chol HaMoed.\n<\/p>\n<h2>6. A Spiritual Lesson for Every Week<\/h2>\n<p>\nOn Friday morning, we remove our Tefillin after prayer and do not wear them again until Sunday morning. This interruption does not weaken our attachment to the mitzvah.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt teaches that our relationship with Hashem is expressed in different ways:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>during the week, through the sign of Tefillin;<\/li>\n<li>on Shabbat, through the holiness of the day itself;<\/li>\n<li>during the week, through effort and creative action;<\/li>\n<li>on Shabbat, through rest, prayer, Torah study, and the joy of the soul.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nNot wearing Tefillin on Shabbat does not mean that the sign is absent.
