What is genizah?<\/h2>\n

A genizah<\/strong> is the respectful setting aside of sacred writings and certain objects that directly served holiness once they are no longer usable. It is not a \u201creligious trash can,\u201d but a way of preserving their dignity until they are buried in accordance with halakha.<\/p>\n

An invalid mezuzah retains its sanctity. Whether torn, faded or damaged by moisture, it must never be thrown away. Some damage may still be repairable: first have the mezuzah checked by a qualified sofer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The case<\/h3>\n

A mezuzah case<\/a> that actually held a mezuzah must be placed in genizah when it is no longer usable, whether it is made of plastic, wood, metal, glass or stone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tefillin: What Should Be Done with Each Part?<\/h2>\n

The parchments<\/h3>\n

The tefillin parchments<\/a> are the very heart of their kedushah. Even when invalid, they must be placed in genizah.<\/p>\n

The batim<\/h3>\n

The black leather boxes containing the parchments must not be thrown away. When they are beyond repair, they must be given to an appropriate genizah facility.<\/p>\n

The straps<\/h3>\n

The Shulchan Aruch explicitly lists tefillin straps among the items that require genizah. This remains true when they were cut during replacement.<\/p>\n

The bag and outer cover<\/h3>\n

A bag specially made for the storage and honor of tefillin, especially when embroidered or decorated, must be placed in genizah once it is no longer usable.
