Difference Between a Mezuzah Mehudar and a Simple Mezuzah

The distinction between a mezuzah mehudar and a simple one lies mainly in the appearance of the writing on the parchment and the presence of tagims (crowns) on the letters that require them. A mehudar scroll is characterized by writing that not only adheres to the norms of halakha (Jewish law), but embellishes them with refined details, such as the tagim on certain letters. These embellishments are not present on simple scrolls which, although kosher, do not follow all the stricter parameters of halakha to be considered mehudar.

Irregularities in the klaf (parchment), sometimes caused by excessive scrubbing or holes, can also distinguish a simple mezuzah from a mehudar mezuzah. These subtle details, often only discernible by experts, play a crucial role in the classification and evaluation of the mezuzah.
