Does your caravan, mobile home, campervan, or RV require a Mezuzah? A Sephardic halachic answer based on the
Shulchan Aruch and the rulings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt”l.

With the growing popularity of road trips and alternative housing, the question of placing a
Mezuzah in a caravan, campervan, RV, or mobile home has become increasingly common.
Is a home on wheels considered a true dwelling, a dirah, according to Halacha?
In light of the Shulchan Aruch and the rulings of contemporary Sephardic authorities,
especially Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt”l, here are the main principles to know in order to fulfill the mitzvah correctly.
1. The Basic Principle: What Is Considered a “Home”?
For the obligation of Mezuzah to apply, the place must meet certain structural requirements
defined by the Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 286:11:
- 📏 Size: A minimum area of four by four cubits, approximately 3.8 to 4 m², which is the case for most caravans and RVs.
- 🚪 Entrance: The doorway must have a recognizable doorframe, a tzurat hapetach, with two vertical posts and a horizontal lintel above.
However, the decisive factor for a caravan remains its mobility and whether it is permanently fixed to the ground.
2. The Caravan: With or Without a Blessing?
This is where the halachic distinction becomes crucial.
A caravan is built for travel, but people also eat, sleep, and live inside it.
🚐 A. A Caravan or RV on Its Wheels
If the caravan remains on its wheels and is intended to be moved regularly:
- Status: There is a doubt among halachic authorities as to whether it is considered a permanent residence, a dirat keva.
- Practical ruling: According to the Yalkut Yosef, Yoreh De’ah 286:15, a Mezuzah should be affixed because of the doubt, but without reciting a blessing.
💡 Reasoning: We apply the principle of safek berachot lehakel,
meaning that when there is uncertainty regarding a blessing, we refrain from reciting it,
while still affixing the Mezuzah in order to satisfy the possible obligation.
🏠 B. A Permanently Fixed Mobile Home
If the wheels have been removed, or if the structure is permanently supported on blocks or foundations
and connected to utilities such as water and electricity:
- Status: It loses its status as a vehicle and becomes a true dwelling.
- Practical ruling: The obligation is definite. A Mezuzah is affixed with the blessing, provided it serves as a primary or regular residence and all other halachic conditions are met.
3. Holiday Rentals and the 30-Day Rule
If you rent a caravan or mobile home for a holiday, the obligation depends on the length of the stay
and the location, according to the Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 286:22.
🌍 Outside Israel
- Fewer than 30 days: Exempt from Mezuzah, because the stay is considered temporary.
- More than 30 days: The obligation begins after thirty days.
💡 Optional stringency: It may nevertheless be praiseworthy to affix one without a blessing, even for a shorter stay.
🇮🇱 In Israel
- Immediate obligation: A rented dwelling in Israel generally becomes obligated immediately.
- Even for a short stay: A Mezuzah should be affixed, although a rabbi should be consulted regarding the blessing when the structure is mobile.

- 🔩 Attachment: In a moving caravan, ordinary double-sided tape may not be strong enough because of vibration and heat. Use a secure case and reliable fastening method.
- 🚪 Doorway: If the entrance is rounded, lacks a proper lintel, or has an unusual structure, consult a competent rabbi.
- 🧭 Orientation: Sephardic custom is to place the Mezuzah vertically. The widespread Ashkenazi custom is to place it on an angle.
